Review For Kiss Of The Damned

"Kiss of the Damned" is rather a hoot.
Soren Anderson-Seattle Times

An ambitious, if deeply flawed, vampire love story ...
Tirdad Derakhshani-Philadelphia Inquirer

The confident, female-driven sensuality of "Kiss of the Damned" anchors this handsome nonsense.
Amy Nicholson-Los Angeles Times

Cassavetes can film an erotic encounter worthy of the 1970s and the golden age of sex scenes, and that is no small compliment these days.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

"Kiss of the Damned" tries to give the vampire movie something it most definitely does not need: class.
Jeannette Catsoulis-New York Times

Just what we need-another sophomoric, oversexed vampire movie.
Rex Reed-New York Observer

a significantly more mature - and sexy - take on vampire romance, approaching its subject with sophistication and sensuality even as it indulges in gore and terror that's as metaphorical as it is visceral.
Todd Gilchrist-ToddGilchrist.com

Manages to add a new wrinkle to one of cinema's oldest and hoariest genres.
Kelly Vance-East Bay Express

Just about any episode of True Blood is sexier, more entertaining and thought-provoking than Kiss of the Damned.
Staci Layne Wilson-StaciWilson.com

A rare treat, especially for those who like to see grindhouse-oriented subject matter done with intelligence and substance.
Nathan Southern-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Bloody awful.
David Noh-Film Journal International

The pleasure of the film doesn't lie in the plot; it's all about the sultry, horror-tinged mood that Cassavetes manufactures.
Ethan Alter-Television Without Pity

an evocative experience that's high on mood and short on shivers
Bill Gibron-Film Racket

'Kiss of the Damned' does not advance confidently enough in the direction of its nightmares to rise above the fanged pack.
Donald J. Levit-ReelTalk Movie Reviews

More of a macabre snapshot than a cohesive picture, capturing a specific throb of sexuality that helps to ignore frustratingly slack storytelling.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

What distinguishes Kiss Of The Damned is its look, which combines the garish gore and muted tones of '70s Euro-horror with the subtle glow of modern moviemaking; and its sound design, which frequently mixes in a hellish throb.
Noel Murray-AV Club

There's enough fang-sinking, tomato sauce and squelchy sound effects to keep us from feeling peckish.

Movie Overview For Elysium

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that, if successful, will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Review For Elysium

Like Max, the movie has to keep moving, and Mr. Blomkamp lets you fill in the gaps yourself as it progresses. Or not.
Matthew Kassel-New York Observer

Though Elysium is a testament to Blomkamp's extraordinary skill as a visual filmmaker, it does not speak nearly so well for his gifts as a writer.
Christopher Orr-The Atlantic

The action is bludgeoning.
David Edelstein-New York Magazine

A cautionary tale about the dangers of squandering resources that wastes its own talent.
Adam Nayman-Globe and Mail

If Elysium is an example of how recession-era Hollywood intends to dramatize the rift between the haves and the have-nots, let's hope the studios don't also bring back Smell-O-Rama.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

An epic about saving humanity that feels more manufactured than human.
Tom Long-Detroit News

[Blomkamp] really needs to learn that too much action blunts his more interesting statements.
Mark R. Leeper-Mark Leeper's Reviews

Blomkamp has toned down the body horror in favour of more conventional thrills but handles the shootouts and slugfests with panache. His tale of haves and have nots remains a striking and thought-provoking parable, even if it doesn't fully add up.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

The occasionally interesting script is bludgeoned by its heavy-handed political pandering.
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

The logic in the film's dystopian universe seems flimsy under moderate scrutiny. But at least it's ambitious in its attempt to mix sci-fi conventions with social commentary.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

The film is to be commended for its thought provoking premise - something we haven't seen in many films over the U.S. summer.
Matthew Toomey-ABC Radio Brisbane

A project over-designed yet under-thought.
David Katz-Electric Sheep

Depressingly predictable in its ideas and tedious in its boneheaded brutality.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

The best parts of this 'parallel universe' experience are aesthetic.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Neill Blomkamp cements his science-fiction credentials as a filmmaker with a genre vision the likes of which we haven't seen since the socially conscious SF of the 1970s.
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

As he did with District 9, South African filmmaker Blomkamp grounds this sci-fi thriller in present-day society, telling a story that resonates with a strong political kick.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

It's a long time since any major studio closed the silly season with a $115 million Marxist polemic.
Donald Clarke-Irish Times

Just as the creation of a future nightmare, one that disturbingly resembles the world we already know, Elysium is masterful - definitely worth seeing.
David Sexton-This is London

It's great to watch an original blockbuster with some ideas in its head. It's just a pity, and a ironic, that for a film about humanity there's not more human interest.
Henry Fitzherbert-Daily Express

A ripping, gripping fable about two worlds in a dreary future that doesn't seem as far out of synch with today, or as far away, as we might like to think.
Neil Pond-American Profile

This is a film with potentially interesting ideas undone by underdeveloped world building.
Josh Slater-Williams-The Skinny

You don't know where to look next, or to listen, in this movie. Every actor seems to have come from a different rehearsal room.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

Once the narrative grinds into gear ... the film's distinctive quality is lost.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

Writer-director Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to District 9 is an engaging, fast-paced Sci-Fi thriller with a strong script, gripping action set-pieces, superb special effects work and a terrific central performance from Matt Damon.
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

A confident sidestep from District 9 rather than an ambitious leap forward, Elysium confirms Blomkamp as an expert genre director. Question is now: can he become more?
Jonathan Crocker-Little White Lies

A directorial oddity.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

Review For The Good Doctor

Wants to be a twisty nail-biter, but never creates much suspense or surprise.
Ian Buckwalter-The Atlantic

Orlando Bloom gives one of his most interesting performances; It's a creepy, effectively chilling piece of work.
Richard Roeper-Richard Roeper.com

Its meaning is unclear. Its vital signs are shaky. And before long, the whole frail thing's on life support, just begging for somebody to pull the plug.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

Targeting age-old English class consciousness, not contemporary American healthcare woes, the movie is a shrewd commentary on careerism and status.
Sheri Linden-Los Angeles Times

Whether you take it as a comment on our rote acceptance of authority figures or just a deliciously creepy character study, you'll come away from "The Good Doctor" wanting to keep religiously eating that apple a day.
Sara Stewart-New York Post

If "The Good Doctor" isn't a bad movie, it tells only half the story.
Stephen Holden-New York Times

A solidly constructed little character study of dark romantic bloom commingled with slipping-knot mental instability.
Brent Simon-Shared Darkness

Visually capturing that chemistry between god-in-training and his just rewards silently sums up the film long before the kindest cut of all.
S. James Wegg-JWR

A Dr. Kildare drama gone berserk on meds.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

After watching this film you should be doubly determined to stay away from hospitals.
Robert Roten-Laramie Movie Scope

... a tale of quiet obsession ... one of those queasy little thrillers, like One-Hour Photo, that'll have you talking back to the screen, shouting, 'No, he wouldn't possibly do THAT!' And then he does.
Glenn Lovell-CinemaDope

[VIDEO ESSAY] "The Good Doctor" is a seriously creepy Euro-styled thriller. Regardless of their position on Obamacare, no one who sees this movie will feel any better about being a hospital patient.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

Daly uses Bloom's chilly exterior to hook you into the often preposterous doings ... It's just plausible enough to give you a good case of the chills.
Marshall Fine-Hollywood & Fine

Suspenseful and sinister, making one wary of checking into a hospital.
Susan Granger-SSG Syndicate

A compelling, character-driven film about a particularly antiseptic form of madness.
Robert Levin-amNewYork

It's too bad that the events leading up to it are so ridiculous that they undermine what's otherwise a powerfully disquieting denouement.
Annlee Ellingson-Paste Magazine

Don't allow this doctor to treat you.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

The film is an observant examination of cognitive dissonance, the torment felt by a person who is simultaneously holding two completely opposite values.
Mike McGranaghan-Aisle Seat

Suspense is anemic in this dark hospital drama about a resident getting too intensive in his care for an attractive patient.
Doris Toumarkine-Film Journal International

It's a portrait-as-thriller whose fundamental elements are all fine, but whose protagonist just isn't as grippingly complex as the film needs him to be.
Alison Willmore-AV Club
